The Road to Chiropractic
I was going to be a veterinarian. Even though I was excited about a career in veterinary medicine, I didn’t realize veterinary medicine was not in my future. Here is why.
I suffered frequent bouts of low back and leg pain from a lifting injury which occurred when I was 17 years old. In fact, I was lifting my dog onto an examination table at my own vet’s office when I felt a sudden sharp, stabbing pain in my lower back. It was all I could do to stand straight up and I was in excruciating pain. I never liked to go to doctors and I wasn’t about to start then. Even though I was hurt pretty badly, I just did what I could to keep the pain as low as possible. Basically, I stretched and laid down a lot. I was never one to take aspirin or Tylenol or any other over-the-counter medications, so I just “dealt with it”. Eventually (after many months) the pain subsided and left me with frequent episodes of back and leg pain, sometimes so bad that I couldn’t walk. This continued for 7 years.
While applying for vet school, my landlord suggested I see her chiropractor. Even though my parents used a chiropractor, it never occurred to me to see one myself. I repeatedly told my landlord “I don’t need to see a chiropractor…I’ll be fine”. After many (stubborn) months of her prodding me to go, I finally gave in and went to her chiropractor.
My Life Changed in One Chiropractic Visit!
Not knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised to find my new chiropractor not like any other doctor I had ever seen. He actually listened to me. Not only was he extremely knowledgeable, but after a thorough evaluation of my condition, he took the time to explain to me what the problem was, why I got this way, and how he would be able to help me. He taught me about the spine and how the nervous system keeps us healthy and how subluxation interferes with my best health. He gave me my first adjustment and I was astonished that my pain was all but gone…just after one adjustment! This was life changing for me. How can I have suffered for 7 long years and with one adjustment, feel so good? I have since corrected my spine and I have never had to suffer with that type of pain again!
I began searching for chiropractic schools and found that there were many excellent schools all over the United States. I chose Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, Oregon because it was one of the oldest schools (since 1904) and had one of the most rigorous and comprehensive programs of all the colleges.
As I started the chiropractic program, I became fascinated by human anatomy, especially the nervous system. I never knew how much our nervous system controlled literally every cell and system in our body. I learned everything I could while in school and graduated with Cum Laude honors in 1985.
Chiropractic Art & Science Philosophy
My practice has evolved over the years and my education in healing has become more comprehensive. Before moving to Portland, Oregon, I practiced chiropractic in Tucson, Arizona. While in Tucson, I studied acupuncture and was licensed to practice acupuncture along with chiropractic for the benefit of my patients. In 1991, I began an Orthopedic Specialty program which I completed in 1993. Because of my diverse educational background, I see many different types of people with varying health problems, some of which other chiropractors have turned away.
The most significant thing I have learned in my nearly three decades of practice, is that the health of our spine and nervous system controls and influences the health of our entire body including our longevity! Even though many people think chiropractors are back doctors, we are, in fact, nervous system doctors. We make the nervous system work better. When your nervous system is working well, so is your health and vitality. I plan on being around for a very long, long time!
On a Personal Note
My two children have been raised with the same philosophy of health I practice for myself. Neither one of my children have needed to have the ever increasing immunization regimen…which today total 69 injections before age 18! Neither of them have needed to see a medical doctor or needed to take prescription medication throughout their childhood. They were raised with chiropractic care and other natural health choices such as good diet, acupuncture, and naturopathy. They were truly drug-free kids! Imagine if you could raise your kids with less medications, less drugs, less doctor visits and less hospitalizations.
My free time always includes some sort of exercise. I enjoy weight training, hiking, yoga and racquetball. I also play a mean game of Ping Pong.
In 2007, I took 2nd Place in the Light Heavyweight division of the Oregon Ironman Natural Body Building competition (I did that on a dare from my personal trainer).
I love to move my body and I love to eat. Put me in a kitchen with some good knives and I’ll be the first to find a great recipe and start preparing a healthy meal. I like all types of vegetables as well as chicken, fish and beef. Nothing, however, beats a killer pepperoni pizza! Oh, have I mentioned that the Willamette Valley has some of the most fabulous Pinot Noirs? I love great wine and Oregon has the most beautiful wineries around.
It is well known (and practiced by me and my patients) that regular chiropractic adjustments keep your immune system strong. I see my chiropractor regularly so my nervous system can keep me healthy. Between my adjustments, healthful eating, great wine and exercise, I can really say that I practice what I preach!
